We are All People

If you’re at all in touch with the world outside you, negative news is a constant. There seems to be no pause to the flow of it and no lack of sources. There is so much going on around the world that keeps bringing me back to one, perhaps oversimplified, thought:

If we could just treat ourselves and others the way we were meant to, how much of this wouldn’t exist? Or maybe the thought is on point and the world has become overly complicated.

What do you think? How much of your personal drama exists because you didn’t extend love, understanding and grace to someone, or these things weren’t extended to you? Why are so many systems designed to divide and conquer? Worse still, we have adopted our behaviors to survive in these systems, so we too have become cutthroat, although we call it “being competitive” and “staying relevant”. We’re not even aware of it until some situation leaves us with an extreme choice to make and we are forced to face ourselves.

What if we started with ourselves? Supposed we slowly started treating ourselves better? I’m not talking about regular mani/pedis and massages (although those sound really good). I’m talking about

  • the way we talk to and about ourselves,
  • the fact that we believe caring for others means forgetting about our own needs,
  • constantly competing with others (even if it’s mostly in our heads) instead of working steadily to be our best,
  • putting aside the things we actually value because ‘society’ says value these instead, basically guaranteeing that we can’t be happy and whole, but are always seeking to be.

Another Great Divide, if you will.

If we start being kind to ourselves it will eventually touch others. If we begin to value ourselves, we will learn to value others. Let’s do what we can in our own lives and in our circles of influence.

If you watch or read the news, you know we need this. We are all people, let’s start treating others the way we want to be treated.
