Take it all out

Moving.

I don’t personally know anyone who loves the work of moving. The excitement of somewhere new? Sure. Leaving some stuff behind? Maybe. But the actual process of moving? No one I know loves that part.

I recently started that process, and as I lay reflecting after a day of packing, a few parallels dawned on me about moving and life. I thought I’d share one today.

My tired mind flitted around from thought to thought and landed on the question of when I started to feel as if I was accomplishing anything. I stayed there for a bit and realized it was when I started taking everything out from the corners and closets they were wedged into. You see, at the start of the process the aim was to begin packing, but be able to continue with life as seamlessly as possible. So, things not needed in the near future were boxed up and those boxes were tucked away into places where they wouldn’t get in anyone’s way, and ideally wouldn’t be seen at all. It wasn’t until I started taking those well-tucked boxes from their corners and hiding places that the rooms began to feel lighter and I began to feel like I was getting somewhere.

What’s the parallel here? I began thinking about the ways in which we hide our baggage – the emotional wounds we haven’t dealt with. We tuck them away, hoping no one will see them and that they won’t get in the way of us living life well. But so often we end up feeling stuck or not being able to enjoy our accomplishments; we get upset when people unknowingly kick the corners of our boxes that are sticking out; we can’t ignore the fact that everything looks good, but we still feel heavy. Maybe that’s because, like moving, a major part of the process is taking it all out over time and going through it – deciding what to keep, what to return to their rightful owners, what to let go of.

We will never feel lighter until we actually deal with our stuff. It’s one of the hard parts, no doubt, but it makes the rest of the process – whether moving or moving forward with life – much simpler and more enjoyable.

Let’s commit to freeing those corners and closets. It’s time to take it all out.
