Have you ever been given a vague assignment or been asked to do something that even the person asking couldn’t quite explain?
You did your best based on the information you had and the end result was greeted with some version of “that’s not what I meant”.

You probably thought, “Oh, so now you know what you wanted?” But you probably said, “I’m sorry. I’ll rework it.”

How can you rework it? You have no idea what ‘it’ is? How can you find out?


There seems to be some stigma attached to asking.
If I ask I will appear dumb.
If I was really smart, I would ‘get’ what they meant without asking.
If I ask I might be bothering them.
If I ask it may raise questions about my usefulness or suitability for the position or task.

Being intelligent, useful and good at something should not include mindreading, but it should include doing what’s necessary to do a noteworthy (in a positive way) job.

If they can’t make their idea or instructions clear, it’s because they’re not even clear about them yet.


Asking your questions might be the very thing they need to achieve clarity. Asking the right questions of the right people can make an astounding difference in results.

That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? What you produce.


Your results will put all the above stigmata to rest. You don’t have to tell people you’re good enough. You don’t have to worry how your questions will make you look. You just have to do the bang-up job you know you can do, and the rest will take care of itself.

And it all starts with asking.

Don’t be afraid to ask.
